TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING IN SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS

•

Abstract

Basic research principles of transportation engineering are presented on the basis of studies concerning transportation in sparsely populated areas carried out in 1968-1983. It can be stated that, besides knowledge of general transportation engineering, information on the traffic and road system in rural areas is needed in regional planning at village level. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to produce, develop and apply not only technical data but also non-technical knowledge. To meet the planning objectives the environmental viewpoint and its interactions should still be widened. This will require better coordination and cooperation of transportation and other fields, both in research and planning activities. (TRRL)
