Abstract
While seasonally fixed passive coolers provide thermal relief during heat-stress periods, their intrinsic mechanism of continuous heat dissipation renders them inherently thermally penalizing during the heating season. Here, we report and highlight a novel dynamic evaporative and radiative cooling device that enables temperature-responsive regulation of solar reflection, thermal emission, and water evaporation. Under hot conditions (>23.0 °C), the device can dynamically switch to a cooling mode, exhibiting high solar reflectance (0.918), strong thermal emittance (0.916), and efficient water evaporation (0.696 kg m −2 h −1 ). Conversely, under cold conditions (<23.0 °C), the device can switch to a heating mode, effectively suppressing water evaporation and thermal radiation while enhancing solar absorption (∼0.950) for heat preservation. Most notably, the year-round energy simulations indicate that the device can achieve over 40% greater primary-energy savings and CO 2 -emission reductions than the dynamic radiative cooling baseline. This work advances the field of adaptive thermal management, presenting a feasible solution towards year-round building decarbonization and global energy sustainability.
