Abstract

As eloquently stated by Dr Saul R. Gusberg in the foreword toReproductive Immunology, "this volume represents a milestone, for it will establish the identity of reproductive immunology as a significant area of basic immunology and as a significant division of the discipline of reproductive medicine." Initially a subdivision of bacteriology, and further developed coincident with the emergence of molecular biology, the science of immunology has now influenced almost all areas of medicine. With the growth of obstetrics and gynecology, both as a clinical and basic science, areas of subspecialization have recently become firmly established and have grown both as to their utility in clinical medicine and in the complexity of their respective subject matter. All three major areas, gynecologic oncology, endocrinology-infertility, and maternal-fetal medicine, have been enhanced by the application of immunologic principles and concepts. Thus, important advances in gynecologic tumor immunology have made the potential of early diagnosis
