Section IV: Medical Informatics

This new 4th edition of the Medical Informatics section will offer an expanded view of the topic. In addition to the traditional subject matters covered, which have been in several cases updated, new application areas have emerged both at the micro as well as at the macro levels. As shown in Figure IV.1, both areas: molecular and cellular processes (micro) and populations and society (macro) refer to the areas of bioinformatics and public health informatics, respectively. Both have a lot to offer particularly if we want to focus our healthcare delivery systems of the twenty-first century on wellness through disease prevention.
