This volume presents a novel, theoretical, micro-analytical model – the 3A Methodology – for assessing the quality of school education Drawing on philosophers as well as theoretical and pedagogical traditions from European and American contexts, the authors construct a model that is relevant to teachers, researchers, and teacher educators regardless of cultural setting. The chapters explain the 3A Methodology as a specific research tool developed to study classroom situations in the form of case studies, revealing findings that demonstrate prototypical failures (didactic formalism) that threaten to compromise the quality of learning as well as prototypical didactic virtues that verifiably support students’ learning. Ultimately building on the distinction of three modes of existence of educational content (the intersubjective, the subjective, and the objective modes), the book helps rediscover didactics as a transdisciplinary theory of content transformation and contributes to the improvement of teaching and learning in the classroom long term. This volume will be of interest to scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students working in school education, educational psychology, and didactics more broadly. Teacher educators and school administrators may also find the book of interest.

Owing to its geopolitical position, Turkey owns several sea basins that are of great strategic importance. Turkey’s primary interests in those basins necessitates that the country assumes an active role and responsibility in foreign policy. Therefore, controversial issues arising from international maritime law and relations with riparian states constitute a crucial part of Turkey’s foreign policy. Recently in particular, the increasing importance of using marine resources for states paved way for some tensions between countries in potentially strategic sea basins. Turkey is one of the countries that is affected by that situation owing to its geopolitical position. The extent to which economic activities within the sea basin, pertaining to energy resources in the seas, can be used by countries constitutes the most important issue of today’s maritime law. In particular, the high number of riparian states and the nature of marine resources in the region render those issues even more important. In case of the existence of more than one riparian country, the most important principles concerning the extent to which countries will benefit from marine resources appear within the framework of the concept of continental shelf. The concept of continental shelf, formalized with the Geneva Convention on the Law of the Sea, allows riparian states to conduct activities on a legal basis, in accordance with principles of international maritime law such as equity, proportionality, and domination of land over sea. Another concept that accompanies the concept of continental shelf is the concept of the exclusive economic zone, and the activities conducted within the framework of those concepts aim to eliminate conflicts that might arise between riparian states. We hear those concepts all the time, especially during disputes regarding oil and natural-gas exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. This necessitates the development of strategies based on national interest and fair sharing by adhering to the concepts and principles developed by international maritime law in maritime regions under tension. Moreover, developing such strategies will help in establishing important mechanisms to deter states from activities that are illegal and in violation of the law of the sea. The expression Blue Homeland, which suggests that Turkey’s marine resources surrounding its borders should be considered an important a part of the Homeland as the land, has just begun to appear in the literature of international relations. Accordingly, all the maritime jurisdiction areas that have been declared and are expected to be declared in line with Turkey’s rights and duties arising from international law are called the Blue Homeland. Pursuing a policy within the framework of the Blue Homeland doctrine in all matters involving the maritime law to which Turkey is a party has been discussed frequently in recent years. The active role that it plays in the littoral seas, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean, requires that Turkey be in a stronger position in terms of potential conflicts and tensions with other riparian countries. This study aims to reveal Turkey’s Blue Homeland map based on the treaties and conventions to which Turkey is a party, especially the basic texts of the International Law of the Sea. Therefore, the study examines all problems pertaining to the issues within the scope of the law of the sea to which Turkey is a party within the framework of the Blue Homeland approach.

Each year, extreme floods, which appear to be occurring more frequently in recent years (owing to climate change), lead to enormous economic damage and human suffering around the world. It is therefore imperative to be able to accurately predict both the occurrence time and magnitude of peak discharge in advance of an impending flood event. The use of meta-heuristic techniques in rainfall-runoff modeling is a growing field of endeavor in water resources management. These techniques can be used to calibrate data-driven rainfall-runoff models to improve forecasting accuracies. This book, being also a Special Issue of the journal Water, is designed to fill the analytical void by including fourteen articles concerning advances in the contemporary use of meta-heuristic techniques in rainfall-runoff modeling. The information and analyses are intended to contribute to the development and implementation of effective hydrological predictions, and thus, of appropriate precautionary measures.

Lean management describes a set of methods combined with a management philosophy which aims at eliminating waste in logistics processes. In production logistics, lean is already widespread and applied successfully. Research has shown that lean also works in a warehousing environment. In transport logistics, lean is still at a low level of maturity in both research and practice. This work contributes to closing this gap by introducing Heijunka leveling to transport logistics.

This special issue aims to contribute to the climate actions which called for the need to address Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, keeping global warming to well below 2°C through various means, including accelerating renewables, clean fuels, and clean technologies into the entire energy system. As long as fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) are still used in the foreseeable future, it is vital to ensure that these fossil fuels are used cleanly through abated technologies. Financing the clean and energy transition technologies is vital to ensure the smooth transition towards net zero emission by 2050 or beyond. The lack of long‐term financing, the low rate of return, the existence of various risks, and the lack of capacity of market players are major challenges to developing sustainable energy systems. This special collected 17 high-quality empirical studies that assess the challenges for developing secure and sustainable energy systems and provide practical policy recommendations. The editors of this special issue wish to thank the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) for funding several papers that were published in this special issue.

The collection of essays in this volume offers fresh insights into varied modalities of reception of Epicurean thought among Roman authors of the late Republican and Imperial eras. Its generic purview encompasses prose as well as poetic texts by both minor and major writers in the Latin literary canon, including the anonymous poems, Ciris and Aetna, and an elegy from the Tibullan corpus by the female poet, Sulpicia. Major figures include the Augustan poets, Vergil and Horace, and the late antique Christian theologian, Augustine. The method of analysis employed in the essays is uniformly interdisciplinary and reveals the depth of the engagement of each ancient author with major preoccupations of Epicurean thought, such as the balanced pursuit of erotic pleasure in the context of human flourishing and the role of the gods in relation to human existence. The ensemble of nuanced interpretations testifies to the immense vitality of the Epicurean philosophical tradition throughout Greco-Roman antiquity and thereby provides a welcome and substantial contribution to the burgeoning field of reception studies. ; The collection of essays in this volume offers fresh insights into varied modalities of reception of Epicurean thought among Roman authors of the late Republican and Imperial eras. Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus’s Testimonies The Frisian humanist Rudolph Agricola (1443-1485) is rightly famous for single-handedly bringing the Italian Renaissance to the North. Owing to his fascinating personality and many talents, he attracted the love and admiration of his contemporaries and the following generations. As a result, six biographies on Agricola have been preserved. The authors of these lives drew their materials from different sources and wrote their texts independently from each other. Differing vastly in rhetorical aims and methods, they provide us with a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the 15th century. Erasmus praised Agricola's work throughout his writings. No less than fifty testimonies from Erasmus and his correspondents are presented here. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola's letters (BLN, 2002) and is preceded by an expert survey of all biographical information now at our disposal. Thus it fills a gap in our knowledge of a great man of letters, while correcting a number of persistent misconceptions (concerning the year of Agricola's birth, for instance).

This book examines the Russian Federation’s military interventions in the post-Cold War era. The work connects key events – the Chechen and Georgian Wars, the annexation of Crimea, the Syrian intervention, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine – in a coherent narrative, showing how these conflicts grew out of Russia’s authoritarian turn, aggressive nationalism, imperial ambitions, and willingness to challenge the Western-led international order. The book not only describes Russia’s post-Cold War military operations but also analyzes them to understand how Russia makes war. As such, the book consists of two distinctive but interlinked parts. The first part comprises case studies of the major armed conflicts Russia has been involved in since 1994. The second offers “macro-scale” analyses of various aspects of Russian policies and practices concerning the use of force during the post-Cold War period, including the evolution of Russian military strategies and tactics, their impact on the international legal order, and Russian attitudes toward humanitarian principles and human rights norms during armed conflicts. By focusing not only on battlefield outcomes but also on legality, human suffering, state propaganda, and changes in international norms, this volume offers a diverse and comprehensive view of Russian military practices in the post-Cold War period. This book will be of much interest to students of Russian foreign policy, military studies, law, security studies, and International Relations.
