Seismology

This book covers the following Topics: Concepts in Classical Seismology, Seismic Waves, Seismic Tomography, Theory of Seismic Source, Retrieval of Seismic Source Parameters, Seismic Source Parameters, Physics of Earthquakes, Earthquakes and Plate Motion.

This note presents a basic study in seismology and the utilization of seismic waves for the study of Earth's interior. It introduces techniques necessary for understanding of elastic wave propagation in layered media. Topics covered includes: Stress and strain, Relationship between stress and strain, Equation of motion, Wave equation, d'Alembert's solution, Separation of variables, Fourier transform, Slowness, Travel time curves, Travel time tomography, Snell's law, Critical and post-critical reflection, Surface waves-ground roll, Normal modes, Anisotropy, Earthquake, Focal mechanics.

The material is based on several textbooks, monographs and journal articles. Though the material is clearly far from well elaborated it can be useful for students who want to learn basics of theory of seismology. Topics covered includes: Basic Relations Of Continuum Mechanics, Seismic Source, Methods Of Solution Of The Equation Of Motion, Elastic Waves In Unbounded Homogeneous Isotropic Medium, Reflection And Transmission Of Plane Waves At A Plane Interface, Surface Waves, Seismic Response Of A System Of Horizontal Layers Over a Halfspace To A Vertically Incident Plane SH Wave, The Ray Method.

This note provides an understanding about the fundamental concepts of seismic wave propagation. Topics covered includes: basic theorems in dynamic elasticity, representation of the seismic source and seismic interferometry, elastic wave ropagation, wave potentials, wave excitation from a point source, ray theory, surface waves , seismic anisotropy.

This note provides an understanding about the basics of seismic wave propagation and methods to determine the structure of the earth and the mechanism of an earthquake. Topics covered includes: The elastic wave equation, Ray theory, travel time equations, reflection/transmission coefficients, Refraction seismics, Reflection seismics, Travel time inversion, Surface waves and normal modes, Earthquake focal mechanisms.

This book covers the following topics: Upper mantle discontinuities, Seismic scattering, Earthquake location methods, Seismic tomography, Back-projection methods, Pulse shapes, spectra, and stress drop, Earthquake scaling and energy, Earthquake triggering.

The main objective of this note is to introduce the basic knowledge on earthquake engineering. This note covers the source mechanics of earthquake, hazards and its consequences and also covers earthquake measurement and instrumentation.
