Overview & Synopsis

Two conferences were organized by the Education Committee of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Section of the American Chemical Society (SEPACS) with the assistance of Shippensburg University (SU) to examine the nature and depth of the growing trend of scientific and technological illiteracy in southeastern Pennsylvania and to propose and effect solutions to the problem. These proceedings of both conferences include eight papers and a summary of a panel discussion. The papers are: (1) "Science in Decline" (John H. Grezlak); (2) "Time for a New Attitude" (Joseph Sollenberger); (3) "Science Education and the American Chemical Society" (Keith Peterman); (4) "Excellence in Science Education" (Anthony Ceddia); (5) "American Resourcefulness and the Science Education Crisis" (Paul E. Bell); (6) "Problems in Science Education" (Margaret Smith); (7) "Science Education" (Jeff Coy); and (8) "Science Education: Is It Ill?" (Larry Wm. Graham). A summary highlighting the major areas addressed in each of the papers is included in the preface. Appendices include: a list of proposed solutions to problems in science education; a brief report on results from an American Chemical Society study on chemical education in the United States (considering chemical education for the general public, for other sciences and technologies, and for a career in chemistry); a list of needs and requirements for better education in science and technology; and results of two surveys.
