Career Education in the Public Schools, 1974-75: A National Survey.

The lengthy and detailed report presents, with commentary, a comprehensive nationwide picture, for the 1974-75 school year, of: the kinds and amounts of career education activities in public elementary and secondary schools; the amount of preservice preparation provided for teachers, counselors, and administrators; and the extent of legislative, financial, and personnel support for career education provided to local school districts by State governments. In addition, previous assessments of career education materials were updated, with particular emphasis given to race and sex stereotyping and provisions for the handicapped, and other important career education surveys were reviewed. Questionnaires were sent to selected local school districts, supplemented by interviews in 16 school districts with extensive career education experience, to State education agencies, and to selected colleges of teacher education. Their responses are presented in table form with lengthy explication and discussion. The methodology used for the collection, cataloging, and evaluation of materials is discussed in detail, with particular reference to differences between commercial and noncommercial materials. The results of the current surveys are related to conditions calling for educational reform which career education seeks to ameliorate. A statement from the National Advisory Council for Career Education about the surveys is included. (Author/SA)
