Newtonian shear creep in a smectic B plastic crystal
Overview & Synopsis
We measure the mechanical response of a smectic B plastic crystal (40.8) to a slow shear parallel to the layers. Two techniques are used : an A.C. complex impedance measurement, and a constant strain rate deformation. In the low frequency limit, the smectic B behaves as a Newtonian liquid with an apparent viscosity ∼ 107 poise.
