Ants on the Move
Overview & Synopsis
Environmental education is a dynamic process that empowers individuals, communities, and organizations with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, investigate, and make informed decisions about environmental issues. This article describes how one teacher used ants marching into her kindergarten classroom as an opportunity to establish a foundation for environmental education and integrate mathematics and science. The interest and curiosity of the students inspired the teacher to include outdoor education and build a foundation for environmental literacy standards and environmental education guidelines for excellence in mathematics while promoting several of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) into instruction.
