India - Revitalizing Initial Teacher Education through District Institutes of Education and Training : Case study
Overview & Synopsis
Ensuring a steady supply of well-prepared teachers is a continuing priority in India’s diverse and expansive education system. This case study explores India’s efforts to revitalize initial teacher education (ITE) through District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Although outcomes have varied across DIETs, they have shown potential in addressing local educational needs and improving teaching quality, especially in states that have invested in qualified faculty and have integrated DIETs with broader school reform efforts. The 2020 National Education Policy (NEP) calls for DIETs to be revitalized and developed as Centres of Excellence, highlighting their crucial role in strengthening teachers’ preparedness for high-quality teaching. This case study provides a comprehensive overview of the complexities and potential pathways for using DIETs to improve ITE in India.
