Maximizing Inclusive and Green Growth From the East-West Railway
Overview & Synopsis
The East-West Railway, also known as FICO-FIOL, is poised to significantly enhance grain transportation in Brazil, boosting global food availability and affordability while strengthening Brazilโs export competitiveness. Spanning 2,400 kilometers, it comprises the Centro-Oeste Integration Railway (FICO) and the West-East Integration Railway (FIOL), and its implementation could reshape the socioeconomic and environmental landscape of the regions it crosses. These areas vary widely in economic development and include environmentally sensitive zones, primarily within the Cerrado and parts of the Amazon. With appropriate environmental safeguards, the East-West Corridor can become a model for inclusive, sustainable, and responsible infrastructure that supports global food security.
