Der Band versammelt exemplarische Untersuchungen zur strukturellen historischen Dialektologie des Deutschen auf Grund der phonologischen Strukturentwicklung des Vokalismus und der sie spiegelnden dialektgeographischen Raumstrukturen. Nach drei grundlegenden methodischen Beiträgen (Grundsätzliches und Methodisches zur Rekonstruktion dialektaler Lautentwicklungen, Phonogenetik und Natürliche Phonologie, Zur “phonologischen Zwischenstellung”) folgen neun Studien zu den einzelnen deutschen Dialektregionen.
