Omistamisen kulttuurit
Overview & Synopsis
This edited collection examines how ideals and perceptions related to ownership have changed in Finnish society over the past decades. Combining theoretical discussions and empirical cases, it explores the various forms of ownership—or the relinquishment thereof—to which citizens are being drawn. The book focuses on the cultural dimensions of ownership, asking what new forms of owning are emerging, what old forms of property or concepts of ownership are being challenged, and how ownership is portrayed in the media, politics, entertainment, and everyday discourse. By cultures of ownership, it refers to the meanings, practices, and values attached to ownership as both a discursive and a material phenomenon, understanding ownership as being socially embedded. The book has three sections. The first analyses the forms and evolution of financialization and financialized ownership. The second examines identities tied to ownership, wealth, and investing. The final section examines counter-movements and efforts to break free from dominant cultures of ownership, both in research and in everyday economic practices.
