The port of Dyrrachium, between East and West
Overview & Synopsis
Our objective was to try to define the location of the port of Epidamnos/Dyrrachium, a Greek colony that was founded in 627 B.C. and is nowadays under the modern city of Durrës, on the Albanian coast. Dyrrachium went under Roman protectorate before being integrate into the province of Macedonia. The construction of the Via Egnatia which starts from Dyrrachium to reach Byzantium, became an important factor of development : Dyrrachium acquired a key position, as a centre of transit between Italy, the Balkans and beyond.
